A watch means conditions are right for dangerous weather. A hurricane watch is issued when a tropical storm or hurricane becomes a threat to a coastal area.

Hurricane conditions are possible in the specified area of the watch, usually within 36 hours. For a longer-lived event, such as a hurricane, a watch means that the storm isn't an immediate threat.
